Jedediah S. Smith papers, 1826-1930.

This collection includes correspondence pertaining to Jedediah Strong Smith. There are sent letters (1827-1831, some are reference copies / some originals). There are copies of documents in other repositories relating to Jedediah (1826-1830); letters of Jedediah (1827-1830), a journal of Harrison G. Rogers (1826-1828) and a printed item (1828). The collection has a section on Kansas State Historical Society information on Jedediah and his letters (1910-1930). There is letter from Austin Smith to his father Jedediah (September 24, 1831) and copies of letters received by Peter S. Smith (November 1829 to February 1830). Jedediah Strong Smith was born June 24, 1799 in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. He was the son of Jedediah Smith of New Hampshire and was the eldest of fourteen children. Jedediah's early childhood was spent in Ohio where he received and English and Latin education. At thirteen he became a clerk on a Lake Erie freighter where he learned business methods and met traders returning from the Far West. Jedediah became ambitious for an adventure to the wilderness and he went to St. Louis around...
